Have you ever heard people say that there should be a dislike button on
Facebook? For people who want to express what they hate, people they don’t
like (c’mon I know a lot of you have certain “friends” on Facebook that aren’t
really friends you just have them as friends on Facebook to check up on your secret
enemies or slang frienemies), or for those people that feel awkward liking
someone’s sad Facebook status.
Well here it is! - Sort of. In a Texas
University some students and faculty created a Facebook app just for those purposes
called EnemyGraph (http://enemygraph.com/).
They would’ve used “dislike” instead of Enemy but using dislike would be too
close to Facebook’s “like” and would be copyright infringement, in addition to
that the creators were aiming more for the exact opposite of Facebook “friends”
– “enemies.”
Allowing people to state if they don’t like something, why is this
important? Originally the internet was in a publishing architecture, which
was really in a sense businesses talking to a wall. That a business would put
up a website and users would just look at it, not much feedback on their
website or their products. Now that the internet has moved to a network architecture
were companies leave a comment boxes, blogs, or a Facebook like buttons for
each products on their website. Though “dislike” and “enemy” is negative and
mean it’s still useful constructive feedback for businesses about their products.
Facebook runs queries on things people like but this app runs dissonance queries,
Facebook unites people with things they love but this unites people with common
enemies.
I am a bit worried about this being
used to on regular individual people because I might encourage cyber bulling,
and hurting Facebook’s friendly atmosphere. But this could prove very useful
for businesses and add not just an extra dimension to social networks but also make
the internet’s network architecture more interactive.
